How the People of Kenya Can Be Helped With Free, Clean Water
Most people can’t imagine living in an environment in which they had to boil water before using it for anything. Things only get worse when you have to go out and find wood to build a fire in order to heat the water. People in Kenya have to face this reality every single day. This wood burning in homes also leads to other problems because the air is too smoky to breathe properly. People in Kenya have faced this problem for decades, but it has largely gone unnoticed.
The Vestergaard Frandsen company is working to supply the people of Kenya with free water filters and teach them how to use it. The company has provided about one million water filters as part of its Carbon for Water campaign. This program is funded entirely through the carbon market. The goal is to provide quality water for the people of Kenya to drink for the next ten years. This program will also help reduce the amount of carbon emissions by millions of tons each year.
The leading cause of death in Kenyan children under the age of five is diarrhea. This can most often be linked to contaminated drinking water. In addition, throughout the entire population of the country, repiratory infections rank number 1 as the cause of death. Lung problems are the direct result of all of the air pollution the people have inside their homes due to running wood stoves to purify their water and do their cooking.
The Vestergaard company has paid the cost for the water filters as well as for thousands of workers to go door to door installing them. Statistics are gathered by auditors every six months in order to keep track of how much water has been used in each household as well as how much less firewood has been burned. After verifying these statistics, the auditors issue certificates which can be sold for carbon credits. To get their investment back, the company can then turn around and sell the carbon credits to other companies. It doesn’t take longer than two years for all of this to happen.
The Carbon for Water campaign is a win-win situation for Vestergaard, the people of Kenya, and the environment. This is an excellent plan to develop in other countries that drastically need a supply of fresh drinking water. Doc No.lkhjsdklsd-ssj
