Shakira was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, a Colombian mother Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado of Spanish origin and an American born father William Mebarak Chadid of Lebanese origin. His older half-sister Lucy is a surgeon, his brother, Alberto, is a lawyer, Moses, the third child, Tonino is the fourth child and the closest Shakira, having worked many years as his road manager. One of the first songs I wrote called "Your dark glasses" (in your dark glasses), whose lyrical message revolved around his father and his grief for a child who had died in a car accident. At the age of ten, Shakira tried for her school choir, but it was rejected because her voice had been identified "Too loud." Friends teased her by saying she looked like a goat. Shakira started looking for other opportunities to sing, and participated in a weekly television singing contest for children, Vivan Los Niños (Long Live Kids).
Between the ages of ten to thirteen, Shakira was invited to several events Barranquilla, and became a local celebrity. At that time, she met local theater producer Monica Ariza, who was impressed by Shakira and helped make it known outside Barranquilla. On a flight from Barranquilla to Bogotá, Ariza was sitting next to Sony Colombia executive Ciro Vargas. Vargas agreed to hold an audition for Shakira, which took place a few weeks later in a hotel lobby. Vargas was impressed and returned to the Sony office and gave Shakira's cassette to the song and artist director, but he was not happy at all, and thought Shakira was "a lost cause." Vargas was convinced that Shakira had talent, and set up a surprise audition in Bogotá. He has misled the British Sony executives this bar, and around midnight, said he had a surprise: Shakira. Magia (Magic) was Shakira's debut album, recorded with Sony Colombia in 1991 at the age of 15.
