"Codec" The word is short for coder / decoder or compressor decompressor /. It is essentially a technology used for processing data adapted for transmission through a set of protocols that must be used for reception. MP3 is an example of a common codec. Can be implemented in hardware, software or a combination of both. This article is specifically about the audio codecs. Video signals will be discussed in another article.

The audio data can be compressed, resulting in a smaller file than the original. How small depends codec, and data can be lost leading to a reduction in audio quality. codec type, where data is lost is called a loss, while other data are not lost called lossless.

Lossless codecs work and not as Zip files. In the zip file, the data are compressed to occupy less space. The file is exactly the same way when they played like it was before transmission.
